“I love that all of my classes are highly interactive and give me a chance to share my work with others. We are able to develop as a group and better each other through critiques both in class and outside of class.” —Carey Devon
Who Studies Design?
Designers come in all shapes and sizes. At it's core, design is the manipulation of forms for a particular purpose based on an understanding and sensitivity to foundational principles. Whether your goal is to establish hierarchy in a poster layout or contrast of textures and lines for a garment, the same design principles are at play. In contemporary design fields, the emphasis on making has been reduced while design research and user empathy are growing focuses in an increasingly interactive market.
Grove City College Design graduates typically find employment in countless fields. From interactive design, print design, environmental design to interior design, our program equips young professionals to not only be masters of their field but also of design thinking.
Design Thinking
While designers still make, they need to augment their toolbox with conceptual approaches to design—qualitative and quantitative research, user-centered design and iterative problem solving to name a few. Not only does approaching design from this perspective increase its value for direct stakeholders, it promotes a spirit of inter-disciplinary scholarship in fields such as Communications, Business, Art, Philosophy and Anthropology.
Our Mission & Vision
The Grove City College Design Department seeks to foster passion, appreciation and excellence in design in all of its major forms—print, digital, illustration and interactive. Through pursuing design as a discipline, students better understand the relationship between form and function for the purpose of communicating concepts and investigating solutions to abstract problems.

Philosophy of Design
Historically, design is rooted in making. The contemporary trend is to approach design as a means of problem solving accomplished through research, analysis and user testing. These are two sides to the same coin. By cultivating the whole person, we graduate young designers able to pursue a wide range of careers within the field. We fill the designers toolbox with a well-balanced and comprehensive set of skills.

A Tradition of Faith
Starting with the belief that design is integral to a created universe, we embrace the idea that design is truly surrounding us at all times. By observing the order in the universe, we see the intelligent, perfect plan for system-based design solutions and are able to grow spiritually through its study.
